It really wasn't all that long ago that we as a society knew nothing about mental health. Sure, there were people who had issues, personality traits and things that could not be explained, but people needed answers. However, without facts, it led to a lot of speculation, theories, fear, judgment, condemnation, persecution, bad decisions and even death. A good example of this is the Salem Witch Trials
Thankfully, over the years, numerous people took it upon themselves to offer help to those in need, less fortunate or ill. Sometimes they were affiliated with churches or hospitals, sometimes not.
It wasn't until the 1800's that real advancements were made in the field of medicine Doctors realized there was a difference between physical ailments and things going on in the brain. This new form of medicine was called psychiatry. The introduction of electricity and various forms of equipment also made it possible to do tests and perform experiments.
