Walter Freeman was the first doctor to introduce the transorbital lobotomy. At the time, it was considered to be cutting-edge and it was only administered to problematic high-strung patients. Once completed, the patient was generally a calm / melancholy mass of flesh. Unfortunately, his patients only survived about 50% of the time, but that didn’t stop him from touring the country sharing his new methods.
Since Walter Freeman was not surgically trained and could not legally perform surgeries, he would jam wooden ice picks into the patient's eye sockets and disrupting the brain matter in the patient's skull. He managed to perform this procedure on nearly 4,000 people, but was ultimately expelled from the hospital and lost his medical license.
